Apart from the minority of double-handed swing tennis players, racket sports are predominantly unilateral. Proof of which can be seen in the recent publication of Rafael Nadal and the difference in his biceps bulk! However, the dominant use of one arm is dependant on a flexible and versatile trunk. The incredible athleticism demonstrated by today’s elite players illustrates the importance of having a strong and powerful, yet flexible trunk, all of which can be improved with the inclusion of Pilates training.
Pilates applied to tennis can help to increase trunk rotation and maximise power through range as well as improving coordination and movement around the court. Instilling awareness of body movement and strengthening from the inside out can help to balance the body thereby preventing injury and improving performance.
