What is Pilates?
Pilates (pronounced pee-lah-tees) is a method of exercise and physical movement developed by its founder, Joseph Pilates over 80 years ago dedicated to stretching, strengthening and balancing the body.
Joseph Pilates created the exercises based on 6 principles:
- Breathing
- Concentration
- Precision
- Control
- Centering
- Flowing Movements
Following these 6 principles, Pilates represents a unique approach to exercise that develops body awareness, improving and changing the body’s posture to maintain healthier alignment and increase overall flexibility and ‘CORE’ strength.
Pilates teaches balance and control of the bodyand mind and that capacity spills over into other areas of your life.
How often should it be practiced in a week?
In the ‘ideal world’ Pilates should be practiced everyday.
large majority of our daily activity involves using our bodies in postures and positions which can lead to an imbalance in our overall alignment. Pilates is a great way of preventing this but is not just about doing some exercise 2 or 3 times a week. The real benefits come when you extend the theory into everyday life and learn to use correct posture at home, at work, in the car and whilst playing sport.
How can Pilates help me?
There are numerous benefits you gain from practicing Pilates including:
- Increased ‘CORE’ strength - developing the back, abdominal and pelvic muscles WITHOUT adding bulk
- Improving flexibility and agility
- Toning of stomach and thigh muscles
- Creating balance between strength and flexibility
- Increase lung capacity and circulation – through learning deep, healthy breathing patterns
- Improved bone density and joint health
- Improved Physical Performance – used in conjunction with any other training programme or sport, Pilates can help maximise your potential
