Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy is the most commonly used form of Physiotherapy and refers to the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions / injuries / problems affecting the nerves, muscles, bones and soft tissues of the body. The following conditions can be treated by a MSK Physiotherapy specialist:
Sports Injuries – including sprains, strains, bruising joint problems and other sport restricting complaints
Spinal Problems – including low back pain, whiplash, cervical spondylosis, sciatica, lumbago, prolapsed discs, degenerative diseases, stiff / painful neck and referred arm or leg pain
Joint Problems – arthritis, joint injury, joint instability (hyper-mobility), pain / swelling / stiffness in joints
Soft Tissue Problems – including damage to muscles, tendons, ligament and cartilage
Fractures – treatment to accelerate and influence the healing rate enabling full function once the bones have healed
After Surgery – rehabilitation after surgery aimed at restoring movement, strength and full independent function as soon as possible
Postural Problems – specific treatment and exercises aimed at improving posture and reducing the onset of discomfort.
Having comprehensively assessed the problem and formulated a diagnosis, your MSK Physiotherapist will use one or more of the following treatment modalities:
Joint Mobilisation and Manipulation – used to encourage and aid restoration of normal joint movement
Soft Tissue Techniques – often used to help breakdown internal tissue scarring enabling better tissue repair and elasticity (flexibility)
Electrotherapy – electrical therapy equipment can be incorporated into the management of injuries to help accelerate recovery (Ultrasound, TENS, etc.)
Acupuncture – may be used to influence the healing rate or reduce pain
Hydrotherapy – therapy, exercises and stretching in the water (using purpose built facilities) allowing recovery to start much earlier following injury or surgery
